Description:
Perhaps you’ve been to a foreign country and required the use of a pocket translator to work your way around. If you have then you know that the translations can sometimes be very crude and basic – enough to help you out but rarely good enough to carry on a civilized conversation. Maybe you’ve tried actually talking with someone in their native tongue only to have them stare blankly at you or step back in horror. Odds are you got the words right but messed up the pronunciation which can often alter the meaning of words greatly. Then there are the signs which have been translated into English to better facility tourists like yourself. For the most part they can be very helpful, but sometimes they leave you scratching your head or laughing out loud. Yes, translating from some languages into English can be quite a challenge with the end result often missing the mark by a lot.
Around the world there are thousands of spoken languages. Each dialect often has its own set of letters and symbols, accents and word meanings which help them stand out from the others. In all likelihood, thanks to the public school system, most of us will, at most, manage to learn a second or possibly third language in our lifetime. Whenever we’ve worked on translating and interpreting these languages in school we quickly found out that the meaning of words can change quite quickly. While we might think a sentence or phrase means one thing, a misplaced accent or letter can cause an entirely different meaning to come out.
A mistake in translation can create an embarrassing or hilarious moment. Sometimes, however, it isn’t a mistake by the translator but the lack of a proper or precise word to use that causes trouble. In many languages a subtle change in one thing can cause the final product to take on a totally different meaning. This is probably most notable in the translation of Asian languages like Japanese, Chinese and Korean. While European languages often share strong links with the English language, Asian languages do not and the compatibility when translating can become stretched at times. Symbols can take on numerous meanings and with the added confusion of slang terms, translations can become harder than working out a nuclear physics equation. The result can be some truly eye opening translations where it can take some time to figure out what the original phrase was actually saying.
The following video looks at 10 signs which have been translated into English with interesting results. As you’ll see, these translations suffer for a number of reasons. Sometimes the translation is too literal, and although technically correct this type of translation can come across as being very bizarre. Other times, slang can cause a problem and mean that the translated English phrase is shockingly different than intended. Then there are the translations where the words are all correct but the translation has no syntax or grammar. The result is a jumbled soup of words which can create a rather interesting final translation.
