Description:

Cars are one of the most common collector's items. People pay hundreds, even millions of dollars so they can own some of the most sought after cars. Most such collector's cars are only driven in special occasions and those who own them don't use them on a daily basis, since they are very expensive and rare, and spare parts are hard to come by, so you must take good care of them. Vintage cars and super fast sports cars are some of the most expensive vehicles in the world. Those classic, vintage cars, made decades ago, can now be only bought at auctions, where some of the richest people in the world try to outbid each other, with total amounts paid at such auctions often going as high as $100 million. The following is a list of the 10 most expensive cars ever sold.

1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe -- $7.6 million

This is one of the few American-made cars to be sold at such a high price. Only 6 units of the Shelby Cobra were ever made, which makes it a pretty exclusive item to own. This Cobra is famous because of the fact that it won the 24 Hours of Daytona race, as well as the 12 Hours of Sebring.

1931 Bugatti Royale Berline -- $8.9 million

This was one of the most elegant, luxurious cars at the time it was made. It's 21 feet long, one of the longest cars ever built, and it's one of the six units that were made by this Italian car maker. It was sold for $8,900,000 at an auction in London in 1987.

1931 Duesenberg Model J Murphy-Bodied Coupe -- $10.34 million

The Dusesenberg Model J is a large, bulky car, reminiscent of a truck, and it's powered by a 6.9-liter, straight-eight, twin-cam engine. It was sold in California in 2011, for $10.3 million.

1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder -- $10.9 million

Ferrari made 36 Ferrari GT California Spyders, and this one was sold in 2008, to British radio DJ Chris Evans. Famous Hollywood actor James Coburn used to own it. There is a mighty 3.0-liter V12 engine under the hood of this California Spyder. It was the most expensive car at the time it was auctioned off in 2008.

1968 Ford GT40 -- $11 million

This is the most expensive American car ever to be sold. It owes its popularity to the fact that it was used in a lot of racing scenes in the movie Le Mans, with Steve McQueen in the leading role. Steve McQueen actually owned this car, so it's no wonder why a lot of people were willing to pay so much money to have a car that once belonged to this acting legend.

1936 Mercedes 540K -- $11.7 million

The Mercedes 540K Roadster was sold at an auction in Monterrey, California in 2012. It's a very good-looking car, and it's the most expensive Mercedes-Benz. This two-seat cabriolet was first unveiled at the 1936 Paris Auto Show, and has a straight-eight cylinder engine, with a 4-speed manual transmission.

1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe -- $14.9 million

This Kellner Coupe was sold in 1987 for $14.9 million, and a lot of people expect for it to be sold at a much higher price pretty soon. It has a 12.7-liter engine, that was originally meant to be installed on an aircraft. Since it was pretty expensive for people's standards at the time, Bugatti weren't able to sell a lot of Kellner Coupes, and only three of the 6 that were made, were sold.

1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa -- $16.4 million

The 250 Testa Rossa is one of the fastest Ferraris, and it had a very rich racing history, winning a couple of times at Le Mans, as well as Sebring. Ferrari made 34 units of this 250 Testa Rossa. Its name means "red head" in Italian, and it got the name because of the red valve covers.

1963 Ferrari 250 GTO -- $19.4 million

The 250 GTO has a 3.0-liter, V12 engine, producing 300 horsepower. It features a Berlinetta body style, and it owes its great exterior looks to the magnificent Italian designer Sergio Scaglietti. Same as the 250 Testa Rossa, the 250 GTO has an excellent racing history, and it was auctioned off in 2010 for $19.4 million.

1936 Bugatti Type 57C Atlantic -- $43.7 million (2010)

This grand tourer is the most expensive car sold to date. It was sold in 2010 for a whopping $43.7 million, and of the three units that were made, only two have survived so far. It's a four-wheel-drive vehicle, providing 200 horsepower, and it has a two-seat coupe body style.
