Retrofitting Gas Cars Into EVs Is Both Easy… and Really Hard

As electric vehicles gain in popularity, a string of retrofitting companies have emerged that convert internal combustion engine vehicles into EVs. Startups like Lunaz take classic cars and fleet vehicles and “upcycle” them into refreshed electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, traditional automakers like GM and Ford offer a handful of electrical components for certain models.

So if it’s possible to convert gas cars into electric ones, why isn’t this process more widespread?

To find out, I take a ride in an electrified 1911 Ford Model T and visit companies offering EV upcycling services to find out why converting every car on the road today is a huge challenge.
